THE BANDA MOCHA

Back

Cultural expression

It is an orchestral group conformed of twelve or fifteen musicians. Its name is due to blow instruments that compose it, but specially to the variety of pumpkins called cigars that are then "trimmed". It constitutes a local (afro) version of the village bands. The instruments  are: orange leaves, cabochon fira tubes, reed flutes, a drum, a bass drum, cymbals and the guiro. Generally this band is played by men, mostly older.
The banda mocha comes from to the end of 19ht century and, represents living cultural artistic manifestations in the black communities settled in the Chota and Mira river basin, as well as in the mestizo communities of our canton.
