BATTLE OF IBARRA

Armed confrontation

Ibarra was the only place in Ecuador where Simon Bolivar fought in person. In July 17, 1823, “The Liberator” Simon Bolivar aim rebel troups into battle against the Spanish forces of Agustin Agualongo.

After hearing that Agualongo had defeated another rebel leader, Bolivar ordered his troups marched for seven-day toward Otavalo, then he engaged Agualongo on the streets of Ibarra, near the Hacienda La Victoria, where he won a decisive battle in “La Piedra Chapetona.” Each year there is commemorative ceremony about Bolivar’s victory.

To remember and exalt this historic event – unique with the presence of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, the Municipality of Ibarra develops civic, cultural and social events.
